Avalanche Ranch

Bountiful flowers at the Avalanche Ranch garden
Location: Indian Valley
Farmers: Lindsey Buis-Kelley, Nils Lunder, and kids Adin and Jura
Contact: www.AvalancheRanch.org
Crops Grown for High Altitude: Leeks, Turnips, Cabbage
Lindsey Buis-Kelley, Nils Lunder, and their sons Adin and Jura are the intrepid resident farmers at Avalanche Ranch. From the family’s home along the north edge of Indian Valley they watch snow tumble down the face of Mount Hough during the winter months, hence the ranch’s name.
Of course, in the summer there’s no time for sitting around and watching the view; the farm chores of goat milking, pig feeding, garden weeding and chicken harvesting keep them on their feet while the sun shines. Over the past few years the couple has been testing the waters of the farming lifestyle, raising a variety of animals and crops to see what products best fit the tastes of their family and the local markets.
When they’re not working the farm, Lindsey and Nils are often found in the kitchen. Lindsey preserves the season’s harvest through canning and cold storage, and Nils whips up gourmet meals and homemade cheeses on a regular basis.
Growing for the High Altitude Harvest CSA has been Avalanche Ranch’s first foray into the world of market gardening, and they’re doing a fine job of it. In addition to growing veggies for our CSA, they also produce pasture-raised lamb, goat, pork, chicken, ducks, heritage breed turkeys and raw goat milk (for pet consumption only).
