Greenville High School

Dan Brown at the Greenville High School garden
Location: Greenville, CA
Farmers: Dan Brown and students
Contact: dbrown@pcoe.k12.ca.us
Crops: Jalapenos, Green Peppers, Cucumbers, Pumpkins

Dan Brown heads up the garden project at Greenville High School.  In partnership with students in his Natural Resource Garden and Greenhouse class, Dan has created a beautiful garden from scratch. Raised beds built by  students are bursting with produce, and native plants such as dogwood, willow and choke cherry are grown for local revegetation projects.

Come spring the class starts veggies, flowers and natives in the greenhouse for their annual plant sale. They also sell handmade planter boxes that they build in the school’s large shop over the winter months. The class regularly tackles awesome projects, like their auto-venting heavy duty cold frame.

During a visit to the class, we had the pleasure of watching his students in action. Groups broke off on various tasks, some potting native plants, some harvesting produce, and others calculating the amount of mulch needed in the new herb area. Amidst it all, Dan demonstrated his apparently insatiable appetite for gardening, showing us the lot next to the garden where he is working on expanding the class’s growing space in coming seasons.

We are grateful that Dan is working to inspire new farmers for the future!
