Harmony Acres

Garden beds at Harmony Acres
Location: Indian Valley, CA
Farmer: Susan Payne
Contact: (530) 284-1960
Crops Grown for High Altitude: Potatoes, Lavender, Snap Peas, Oregano
When Susan Payne moved onto her 7 acre property in Indian Valley she felt like she was getting back to her roots. After growing up on a farm in upstate New York, the growing potential of her new home makes her giddy. Harmony Acres spans from the tree line through pastureland and down to the meadow wetlands. “I’ve got it all!” she says gleefully.
Having been on her property for just over two years, Susan is feeling out how she’ll ultimately put all of her land to use. She has begun growing a variety of crops for the CSA, and is exploring the possibility of planting perennial crops like lavender and berries in the future. The resident chicken flock, affectionately referred to as "The Girls," produces eggs with yolks so bright they take your breath away.
Susan is proud of the cooperative spirit that the High Altitude Harvest CSA embodies, and she loves talking it up to folks. “I’m a big believer in people working together.” Susan would ultimately like to see more folks in Plumas County move toward the area’s agricultural origins and hopes that her efforts at Harmony Acres are a step in that direction.
